Alsace, which is 190km long and no more than 50km wide, is made up of two rival départements (administrative divisions) : Bas-Rhin the area around the dynamic regional (and European) capital, Strasbourg; and Haut-Rhin, which covers the region’s more southerly reaches, including the picturesque département capital, Colmar, and the industrial city of Mulhouse. Germany is just across the busy Rhine, whose left bank is Alsatian as far south as the Swiss city of Basel.

Despite its location by the German border, the charming and beautiful region of Alsace is - both in temperament and appearance - unmistakably French. With rolling fields sporadically dotted with clusters of small, half-timber villages, it looks like something straight out of a fairytale, and its tiny towns are home to some of the most famous wine-makers in France. So what better way to really get to know the area than on an extended wine-tasting trip, trekking from vine to vine, sampling some of the best plonk the region has to offer?

Another thing, an Alsatian Christmas is a Christmas you cannot forget! By visiting this time of year you enter a fabulous world enhanced by the magic of Christmas. The christmas market in Strasbourg is authentic and should be on any bucket list.

Alsace is also an essential region to discover the meaning of French terroir: gingerbread, foie gras, sauerkraut, kugelhof, flammekueche ... or Alsatian late harvest wines. Alsace cultivates the taste of food that leave the place a whole range of flavors and spices.

Many gastronomic routes wind around the region: the sauerkraut route, the fried carp route, the cheese route etc.. The most famous of course is the The Alsace wine route! Renowned throughout the world, it takes place along the foot of the Vosges over 170 km through the vineyard.
